English Nature/Natural England

English Nature is responsible for the conservation of wildlife, geology and wild places in England. It is a Government agency set up by the Environment Protection Act 1990 and funded by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Currently undergoing merger with the Rural Development Service and Countryside Agency, the new body, Natural England, "will have a role in rural, urban and marine environments". Its general purpose "will be to ensure that the natural environment is conserved, enhanced and managed for the benefit of present and future generations, thereby contributing to sustainable development".

Joint Nature Conservation Committee

The JNCC is the UK Government's most senior wildlife adviser, undertaking national and international conservation work on behalf of the three country nature conservation agencies English Nature, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Countryside Council for Wales. The website provides access to a wide range of information and reports on policy and legal framework, research, protected habitats, species and sites.

UK Biodiversity Website 

Website supporting the implementation of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP) on behalf of the UK Biodiversity Partnership and the UK Government. Contains very useful information on priority habitats and species, including those found on the Undercliff and surrounding areas, together with details of the the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, Local Biodiversity Action Plans, Species Action Plans and Habitat Action Plans. Contains details of Isle of Wight key habitats and species.

Environment Agency

The Environment Agency is "the leading public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales". It's role is "to  make sure that air, land and water are looked after by everyone in today's society, so that tomorrow's generations inherit a cleaner, healthier world". 

The Environment Agency has a particular regulatory role in coastal defence, land drainage and increasingly in protecting underground water sources, together with a responsibility for ensuring such projects are sustainable and compatible with biodiversity conservation, all of which are relevant to the Undercliff.

South East Forum for Sustainability

SEFS aim is "to help promote and achieve sustainable development in the South East. We work with regional government to ensure that environmental issues are central in all decision making processes". SEFS is heavily involved in lobbying for sustainability in the controversial new South East Plan (SE Plan), the new Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for the region developed by the South East Regional Assembly, which will replace Regional Planning Guidance (RPG9) and influence forthcoming Local Development Frameworks (LDFs).
